Welcome to the Cabinet of Curiosity

Cabinets of curiosities, also known as ‘wonder rooms’, were small collections of extraordinary objects which attempted to categorise and tell stories about the wonders of the world.

The Cabinet of Curiosity collects together various fragments, articles and trivia to create a microcosm of Victorian culture.

This blog will particularly focus on natural history, gender, fair tales, visual culture and the history of emotions.

I am a first-year PhD student at Royal Holloway looking at gender & emotions in the science & literature of the nineteenth-century. My research looks at how natural history in many ways dwelt within the feminine sphere of Victorian culture. And charts a more intimate, personal exploration of natural history that examines the lives of its practitioners beyond the impact of conventional watersheds.
